WORK OF THE SEASON.--M. de Morgan is now at Karnak, where he is superintending the engineering work intended to strengthen the walls and columns of Karnak, which have been undermined by the infiltration of the water of the Nile. He intends to drain the Sacred Lake there, in the hope of finding ancient monuments under the mud. The money for this work lias been provided by the Society for the Preservation of the Monuments of Ancient Egypt. Professor Flinders Petrie has already begun work at Thebes in the neighborhood of the Ramesseum and the famous Colossi of Amenophis. M. Daressj/ has taken up again the excavations lie began last year at Medinet Habu, on behalf of the Ghizeh Museum. A large part of the rubbishmounds which covered the ruins has already been cleared away. Captain Lyons is at Pjiilje, engaged in removing all the rubbish which has accumulated on the island. He will excavate down to the foundation of the temples, and to the blocks of granite on which they stand. In the course of the work it may be expected that many important inscriptions and other relics of antiquity will be discovered.
